We’re all about

The drinking life will kill her, she thinks
so periodically she stops
But Kate is Kate and can’t ever stop
her periodic nightmares, her visceral leaps into eternity
We’re most afraid for her when she’s sober and
she tumbles all the way down again

We’re all about this yearning, this desire

The soccer fields are empty today
Squirrels chase each other – they,
at least, continue their play
The trees are without leaves in a winter’s hush
That seagull over there, his prescient scavenger eyes,
scan us all from the sides of his head

We’re all about this yearning, this desire

Coincidence, chance play a strong part
in any life, in any success
You don’t believe what others believe
You just don’t see it their way
If it’s your pride to be different then don’t complain
when they say you don’t belong

We’re all about this yearning, this desire

His father was a lousy tailor
even though he knew a good suit when he saw it
and was a savvy judge of cloth
He didn’t know how to measure and wouldn’t
or couldn’t see the need for it—
he’d go stitch by stitch by feel

We’re all about this yearning, this desire

What I remember are railroad station waiting rooms,
boarding house dining rooms,
ten dollar hotel rooms, dressing rooms,
pool rooms and men’s rooms
all of which look alike
in any city or town

We’re all about this yearning, this desire

Her smile was her secret
She had those table-hopping actress eyes
that wouldn’t focus on you
for fear of missing someone more important
She’d periodically phone me up drunk and full
of weepy vows of admiration and familial love

We’re all about this yearning, this desire

Matt said there are no jobs for me to find now
The reason I go to the beach everyday is that
I can’t find a job and it’s the only thing
I can afford to do
You needn’t tell me to go to hell, brother
I’m already there

We’re all about this yearning, this desire

She has a scar just beneath her stomach
where her second daughter had been cut out of her
in an emergency birth
That was the sweetest child she said
easy in temperament and kind,
both cold and hot at once

We’re all about this yearning, this desire
